Christine Jorgensen gained fame as the first person in the US to have both sex reassignment surgery and hormone replacement therapy. She underwent the procedures in Denmark in 1951 and subsequently became an actress and night club singer.
Jorgensen used her fame to advocate for the transgender community. She helped lend credence to the burgeoning school of thought that some people did not psychologically identify as the sex they were born into. Jorgensen led countless transgender people to change their names and the sex listed on their birth certificates.
