Boonwaat was the Burmese Ambassador to Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) in 1967. Mr. Boonwaat holds the record for the worst-ever instance of invoking diplomatic immunity.
When he learned that his wife was having an affair with a popular night club singer, Boonwaat shot her on the embassy grounds. He then proceeded to build a huge funeral pyre in the garden on the embassy grounds and cremated her.
Neighbors woke up to a terrible smell and to the sight of Buddhist monks delivering the last rites. When police arrived, Boonwaat invoked diplomatic immunity because the cold-blooded murder had taken place on sovereign Burmese Embassy soil.
He never faced trial in Sri Lanka and it’s unclear what happened to him when the Burmese government called him home right after the incident.
