Powerhouse Politicians You Didn’t Know Were Gay

You may not have known it, but many of America’s most powerful politicians have been LGBT. Sometimes closeted, sometimes not, below we highlight 11 powerhouse politicians you may not have realized were gay!

#15. Harris Wofford

Harris Wofford of Pennsylvania has been the nation’s only known gay male senator, serving from 1991 to 1995 after being appointed by Governor Robert Casey when former Senator H. John Heinz III was killed in an aviation accident.

For nearly half a century, Wofford was married to a woman, Clare Lindgren, and they had three children together. In 1996, however, Lindgren passed away, and at some point, Wofford began a relationship with Matthew Charlton, an interior decorator much younger than himself. In 2016, Wofford, who is currently 91, announced the couple would soon marry.
